In my quest to help users get an account on freechess (FICS) I simply
emailed their support and asked what they wanted people to do.

Due to abuse of the system with some users creating multiple accounts with
free email addresses, we have been forced to deny registration through the
web page to email addresses from those sites that provide a free email
service.
However we recognise that some users may only have an email
address from a free site so we ask those users to log in as a guest and
speak to an admin online about being registered manually.
To do this click 'login' at
www.freechess.org and wait for the
javaboard to load. Once it loads type in g for the handle, no password.
To find an admin online type 'showadmins' then send a tell
to someone on that list using: tell < handle > < what you want to say >.
for example tell justjanie hello etc.
